ELICIA Mailhiot

Company: Castleton University
Title: Communications Coordinator
Age: 28

Career Highlights: The thing that I am most proud of in my career so far is being able to work at my alma mater. Castleton has been my second home since I first stepped foot on campus more than a decade ago, and I’ve had an incredible support system in my former professors, especially Dave Blow. Working at Castleton has always been a goal of mine, and I’m grateful that I have the chance to give back to the place that has given me so much.

Community Involvement: There is so much good happening in the Rutland Region, and three years ago I realized that I really wanted to be a part of this resurgence. In 2016, I signed up to be a reading mentor with Everybody Wins! Vermont, which really kick-started my passion for volunteerism. In 2017, I was named to the Executive Board for Vermont Women in Higher Education and also became active with Rutland Young Professionals. I currently serve as a Board Member and Marketing Committee Chair for RYP, and am the former Events Committee Chair. I also volunteer as a Member for Spring Lake Ranch, a therapeutic community for individuals with mental health challenges and dual diagnosis.

What motivated you to live and work in Vermont? As someone who was born and raised in these Green Mountains, I can’t imagine calling anywhere else home. I get to live, work, and play in a beautiful place in a community I feel supported by and that has offered me meaningful opportunities to support other people.

Favorite part of your job? There’s so much to love about my job, but I think my favorite thing is being able to tell the Castleton story, and to tell the stories of our students and alumni, in different ways. I’m lucky to be able to do that alongside a team of incredibly smart and creative people.

Most inspiring mentor and why: My most inspiring mentor is Elizabeth DiMarco Weinmann. She was one of the first people in my career who recognized my potential and cared enough to take the time to develop my skills. Liz is one of the most intentional people I know, and she shares her knowledge and expertise without reservation. She is someone I'll always trust for guidance in my career.

What is the best career advice you have received? Say yes, then figure it out later.

Favorite Vermont escape: My favorite Vermont escape is Emerald Lake in Dorset. It’s my favorite kayaking spot, with its pristine water and mountain views.

Favorite downtime activity: Outside of work, you can find me with my nose in a good book, spending time with family and friends, or adventuring with my Goldendoodle, Boeing.

Favorite super hero: Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Favorite social media: #TeamInstagram. I love its simplicity and that the emphasis is on visual sharing.

Person you would most like to share a Vermont beverage with: If you’re reading this, Shonda Rhimes, the first Rutland Red is on me!

If you had unlimited access to funds which cause(s) would you support: Higher education and mental health care.
