Anna Grearson

39 | Branding and Communications Specialist, Union Mutual
Residence: Chittenden

Career highlights you are most proud of.
Every internal promotion or bonus opportunity I’ve ever received — peer recognition and confidence inspires me to reach higher and work harder. I am equally proud of the external recognition of this Rising Star Award and previous accomplishments in my sportswriting career, chiefly the National Sports Media Association’s Sportswriter of the Year for Vermont awards and the Ken Squier Award from Thunder Road International Speedbowl.

Community involvement.
The wide variety of community projects Union Mutual generously supports, including Special Olympics Vermont and its biggest fundraiser, the Penguin Plunge; the Point to Point to benefit the Vermont Foodbank; and the Kelly Brush Foundation. I am also active on local and statewide boards and committees: Vermont Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports; Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility’s Events and Education Committee; and sCentral Vermont Memorial Civic Center Board of Directors.

Motivation for living and working in Vermont.
The socially responsible values at the heart of many Vermont businesses — mine especially — aligns with my personal values and provides such fulfilment. Plus, you can’t beat living near the world’s best cheese and beer!

Most inspiring mentors.
At Springfield College, Marty Dobrow, who taught me how to honor the story within each of us and the power of a good pun. In my sportswriting career, Pete Hartt, who taught me “to get over myself“ (my words) and out of my comfort zone. In my insurance career, Michael Nobles, who taught by example the value of taking a chance, the power of quiet leadership and the importance of having a little competitive fun along the way.

Favorite Vermont season.
Fall, because it has the best cooking, the best temperatures, the inherent slowdown of life back into a comfortable routine and the breathtaking show of color our little state puts on before winter sets in.

Favorite downtime activities.
Reading, cooking, traveling, and being outside — hiking, biking, walking, kayaking, gardening. And planning for more of each!

Favorite social media.
Pinterest, purely because there’s no arguing. It allows me to find inspiration in a mindful way.

Person you would most like to share a Vermont beverage with.
My partner, Ted, and my father, John, who we lost in 2010. A trip to Hill Farmstead Brewery with those two wonderful men would be tops on my list.

Causes you would support if you had unlimited access to funds.
I would increase my support of organizations that promote inclusion through sports, like Special Olympics Vermont and Kelly Brush Foundation, giving all bodies and brains the access to the powers of physical activity. I would also support organizations that increase access to mental health services, eliminate the stigma of mental health treatment and promote the direct connection between a healthy mind and a healthy body.

Song on your playlist you are embarrassed to disclose to your best friend.
My best friends are well aware of (and share in) the eclectic mix that is my playlist. But the speed at which I go from 0 to “Elaine Benes“ within the first two notes of “The Power of Love“ these days may raise some eyebrows.

Where you see yourself professionally in the next five to 10 years.
The overarching goals are to remain motivated in the mission, inspired to take the vision onward and upward, and be grateful for the opportunity to combine personal and professional values each and every day. I hope to grow as a mentor, embrace opportunities as a mentee and leave a meaningful mark, not just fill a seat.
