RYAN McLaren

35 | Office of Congressman Peter Welch | Outreach Representative

Residence: Burlington

Career highlight(s): When I think about career highlights, it is relationships that stand out.  I have been lucky enough to work alongside some incredible people and have learned something from each and every elected official, colleague, activist, farmer, teacher, or stranger that I've encountered.  I now call many of these people friends. Any success of I've had personally is really the product of the people around me.

Community Involvement: My role as coach for the Burlington High School Boys lacrosse program is the most rewarding job I have.  I have been with the program for nearly a decade now, through winning and losing, and get to see players I have coached move on to bigger and better things.
I hope they had fun as a part of our team, and take something away from our program that helps them succeed later in life.

I'm also quite proud of my time serving on local school boards.  I am the product of our public schools and believe fervently in the democratizing power of public education. Much work remains to realize the full potential of all our students, but it is the most important work we can do.

What motivated you to live and work in Vermont? I always knew I wanted to be in Vermont.  My family has lived here since the 1770s. I went to college and started my career elsewhere, but was quickly pulled back by the culture of community and service that still exists here.  That felt too powerful to miss out on.

Favorite part of your job? My favorite part of my job is
asking questions. I learn from Vermonters every day. I love exploring the lives and businesses that make up our state, and rooting our work in Congress in the day to day lives of constituents.

What three words best describe you: Three words that best describe me are competitive, convivial, and curious.

Favorite Vermont escape: I love a day trip up to Hill Farmstead. Their new Poetica series is perfect. Start with a donut at Quality Bake Shop. End with Positive Pie and you've nailed it.

Person you would most like to share a Vermont beverage with: Right now, the person I'd most like to share a Vermont beverage with is James Baldwin.
